Web site customization? Pros and cons

By Guide5 Design Team

Several popular websites have allowed their uers to customise their website. New web systems and applications have made it possible to add slicker customization interfaces so more sites are allowing users to customize their pages.
There are certain advantages and disadvantages of Adding Customization to Your Web Site. Lets first see the benefits
By adding customization you can always attract new users and keep existing users more engaged with your site. This is due to the following three factors:

• Personalisation
By choosing its layout and appearance, site visitors can have ownership of your website. The idea of having a piece of the web which is their own is always appreciated by users.

• Choice and superiority
Your site will be liked if the users are given a choice about what content they receive and change the layout so their favorite content features most prominently. They prefer this to stable competitor sites.

• Entertainment
If users can keep adding new content and applications your website will always remain new and fresh. Facebook has quickly gained popularity bacause it allows its users to add third party applications which has now become more than 12,000.

Disadvantages of customization
One should always look for the following points before investing time, effort and money to your website:

• ROI is not gauranteed
Your website by adding customization may not produce a return that covers the resources required to develop it.

• Customization isn’t for everyone and takes time
Over reading RSS headlines on your website, users may prefer going directly to other websites for a richer browsing experience. Many users don’t prefer to put time in customizing a web page.

• Simple is always better
Some beginner internet users may get scared with the customization controls. Non-customizable sites have fewer controls and are simpler which is prefered by users.

• Users may discontinue
Your site visitors may add too much content that they won’t use and will need to remove later. This will lead to creation of pages containing too much information and far too busy.
